Rifle
Training
This is probably the fastest growing competitive
match that the NRA sponsors. Twenty-two caliber rifles of good quality
can be purchased very reasonably. Twenty-two caliber ammunition is the
least expensive of ammunition available.
The course of fire laid out by the NRA requires 40 rounds to shoot,
with 10 rounds at each of the 4 known distances, the last of which is
100 yards. The targets start out small and are progressively larger
out to 100 yards. The immediate gratification of a tink and a falling
target are worthy. Because of the size of the target and the distance,
skill is required and it is a challenging course to fire a perfect
score of 40.
I have seen and shot on other ranges with men that have driven
hundreds of miles to participate in these matches. At those same
matches were sons and daughters shooting the same competition and
maybe enjoying it more than the grown-ups. It is tailor made for a
mother or father to teach their son or daughter marksmanship and in
the process learn safety, respect for other shooters and others’
rights, competitive spirit, how to deal with pressure, and in general,
to have fun.
The NRA sponsors many variations of military rifles. These events
usually require a range of 300 yards; however, we only have 200 yards
at our range. We can compensate for this difference using targets
which represent ranges of 300 yards. I am a member of an NRA CMP-sanctioned
group, shooting in the northern part of the state. Each year they send
a rifle/pistol team to Camp Perry and are always seeking members and
victims. With practice I’m sure that we could field a team which
could do us proud.
First Class Arms Training has three Springfield 03’s, one M1, and
eight M1A’s, for a total of a squad.
